Cone Surface Area Formulas

A cone consists of a circular base and a curved lateral surface that tapers to a point (the apex). The total surface area is the sum of the base area and the lateral area.

Base area: Sbase = πR² (a flat circle).

Lateral area: Slateral = πRl, where l is the slant height — the distance from the apex to any point on the base circumference along the surface.

Total area: S = πR² + πRl = πR(R + l).

<p>The slant height l is not the same as the vertical height h. They relate through the Pythagorean theorem:</p>
<p>l² = R² + h²</p>
<p>l = √(R² + h²)</p>
